Core Teachings
The Scriptures are Inspired
The Bible is God’s written revelation to man, therefore the whole Bible is given to us by the Holy Spirit. We teach that the Scriptures are objective and reveal to us God’s will for mankind. We believe He inspired every word, it is inerrant in the original documents, and sufficient for teaching, convicting, correcting, and training every believer. (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:21)
The One True God
The one true and living God has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent “I AM,” the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind. He is perfect in all His attributes. He has further revealed Himself as embodying the principles of relationship and association as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10-11; Matthew 28:19; Luke 3:22)
The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ
The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, born of a virgin, who lived a sinless life, performed miracles, completed His substitutionary work on the cross, and His physical resurrection from the dead confirms His deity, along with His exaltation to the right hand of God. (Luke 1:31-35; Hebrews 7:26; Acts 2:22; 1 Corinthians 15:3; Matthew 28:6; Acts 1:9; Philippians 2:9-11; John 1:1-4)
The Fall of Man
Man was directly and immediately created by God in His image and His likeness. Initially, man was created good and upright when God said, “Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness”. The intention behind the creation of mankind was that we should glorify God and enjoy His fellowship, living our lives in His will, and accomplish His purposes in the world. However, man by voluntary transgression fell and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God. (Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 1:26; 2:17; Genesis 3:6; Romans 5:12-19; Isaiah 43:7)
The Salvation of Man
Salvation is by God’s grace on the basis of the redemption of Jesus Christ, His shed blood, and not based in our works or merit. Salvation is received by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and by repenting (turning from) our sins and turning to Christ as our Lord and Savior. By the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit, we are justified by Grace through faith. This is the only hope for eternal life, which is evidenced by the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our day to day lives. In short, we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone according to Scripture alone, and to the glory of God alone. (Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:3; John 14:6; John 15:5; Titus 2:11; Romans 8:16; Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 4:24)
The Ordinances of the Church
Two ordinances were given to the church by Christ: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper (sometimes called “Holy Communion”). All who repent and believe on Christ as Savior and Lord are to be baptized, thus declaring to the world that they have died with Christ and have been raised with Him in newness of life. The Lord’s Supper, as well, consisting of the elements, bread and fruit of the vine, are symbols expressing our shared faith in the divine nature of Jesus Christ, proclaiming His death until His return. (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; 2 Peter 1:4; 1 Corinthians 11:26)
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit
As an Assemblies of God church, we believe it is possible for Christians to receive what is called the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”. This is a secondary act by God in the life of the believer, yet it is not required for salvation. This occurrence was experienced by those in the early church, and with it comes an added empowerment for a life of service and evangelism. The initial physical evidence of this act is speaking in another language that was previously unknown to the speaker, yet it is a real language. Any message given by the Holy Spirit would never contradict the inspired words of the Holy Spirit we find in Scripture, and thus every message given publicly must be interpreted and tested with Scripture and with patience. (Acts 1:8; Luke 24:49; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 14:2, 6-11, 14-20; John 15:26)
Sanctification
Sanctification is simply the separation from that which is evil, and dedication unto God, and is brought about by the Holy Spirit’s initial and continual work within us. The Scriptures teach us that a life of holiness is God’s plan for those who are His. Sanctification is realized in the believer by recognizing their identification with Christ in His death and resurrection, and by faith reckoning daily upon the fact our union with Him, and by submitting to the Holy Spirit’s leading in our daily lives. (Romans 12:1-2; Hebrews 12:14; 1 Peter 1:15-16; Romans 6:1-13; 1 Peter 1:5)
Divine Healing
Deliverance from sin is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers, which is a spiritual healing. While we understand God may physically heal, or may not heal everyone of every physical disease or sickness, we praise Him for the eternal healing we have received through the shed blood of His Son. We believe we serve a God who is the author of life, the designer of the human body, and we trust in His sovereign will for any healing we may receive, yet we worship Him in faith knowing that if a physical healing may not come, “all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose”(Romans 8:28). (Isaiah 53:3-4; Matthew 8:16-17; John 5:1-9; James 5:14-16)
The Blessed Hope
The Blessed Hope is often referred to as the Rapture of the Church. In this, we teach that Jesus Christ will, before the seven-year tribulation, translate His church from this earth to be in His presence. Following this event will be a seven year period of intense tribulation upon the earth, after which the event called the Second Coming will take place and the Millennial reign of Christ will begin. (John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-5:11; Romans 8:23; Titus 2:13; 1 Corinthians 3:11-15; 15:51-52)
The Millennial Reign of Christ
The Millennial Reign of Christ begins with the physical Second Coming of Jesus Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years. After the seven year period of tribulation, Christ will come to occupy the throne of David and establish His kingdom for 1,000 years on earth. During this time, the resurrected saints will reign with Him over all the nations of the earth. This reign will be preceded by the overthrow of the Antichrist and his False Prophet, and by the removal of Satan from the world. (Matthew 24:30, 25:31; Luke 1:31-33; Acts 1:10-11; Revelation 20:1-6; Ezekiel 37:21-22; Daniel 7:17-22; Micah 4:3-4)
New Heavens & The New Earth
We look forward to the fulfillment of Christ’s promise of a new heavens and new earth, where we will dwell with Him forever. This is the greatest promise we have as followers of Christ – not that “when we die we get to go to heaven” – but that we get to be with our Savior for all eternity. (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21-22)
